When I first started studying neuroscience, I was a little disappointed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Disappointed because, for such a beneficial and relevant discipline to our everyday lives, it was all hidden within the pages of highly technical scientific journals or collecting dust on some inconveniently placed shelf at Barnes & Noble.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I remember the first of many subsequent aha's, and it happened in the lab: You mean to tell me that the administration of cocaine and sucrose solutions to rodents — and pairing an auditory cue with an electric shock — has something to do with a killer bikini bod? How is this shit not available to the mainstream?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The truth is, most of us are left taking a page out of the latest Oxygen magazine as Gospel — accepting claims that are hardly backed with evidence, with reference to any research studies being largely absent or presented with a very clear bias.

It was at that time that I recognized the need for a practical neuroscience approach that could address the widening chasm between what we do and what we're capable of, and to try to find some common ground... because we both know damn well that living an on-purpose life doesn't involve tape measurements and the scale.

I spent the next several years digging deep into the research, looking for models that could be used in the real world. I had a particular interest in body image and the concept of the 'self' in the brain — how emotions impact our food choices (and relationship with food more broadly), and how inextricably linked the brain is to our ability to perform at our most optimal level; to making measured decisions instead of shooting from the hip, and to bending the parameters of human potential.

With a large appetite for entrepreneurship and leadership (no pun intended), I wondered how I could marry the two: Was it really possible to have it all, or did one have to suffer at the expense of another?

I can't say it was a walk in the park, but closely on the heels of this perfectly imperfect union, The NeuroBabes Academy® was born.

As a native New Yorker, I was conditioned to believe that if I hustled hard enough, I could achieve anything. The hustle was a through-line — a rite of passage, almost; one that taught me so much about the benefits of aptitude, structure, masterful execution, and communication. Over time, however, it morphed into something else: An impossible standard to meet, a frantic way of living, a practice of ignoring my body’s hunger and satiety cues, of beating it into submission.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Productivity became my idol: The thing I cherished above all else. We all have this complicated, tangled web of beliefs about our identity — our minds are, indeed, wonderful storytellers — and one of the early stories I spun is that my ability to get shit done is what gave me a competitive edge.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I couldn’t imagine a world of unfettered grace; where people said good morning in the elevator with a smile on their face just because. The only world that made sense to me was a world of gutting it out, and also don’t greet me before I’ve had my coffee.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But what I eventually realized is that the return on investment was not what I’d imagined; the bar was only getting higher and I was growing increasingly isolated. As it turns out, you can anesthetize yourself with just about anything: Working, exercising, dieting, binge-watching Game of Thrones, having sex, shopping, cleaning even.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eventually, the dam breaks and we circle back to the heart of the matter: Am I worthy — not for my accolades or performance, but for who I am? Does anyone actually SEE me?

When you decide to stop running on the fuel of deep inadequacy and overconsumption — when you decide to walk away from that, there’s nothing but silence. You’re on the side of the road, empty tank: Not having the faintest idea what will catapult you forward.

When you become intimate with the stillness, you will find your footing. In the stillness, your true purpose will be illuminated; your impact amplified.

This is a conversation we need to have more of; in many ways, it’s like speaking a second language — tongue-twisting, yet exhilarating.

Have you ever wondered why world class athletes and musicians practice the same drills over and over again? Because they can't afford to reduce their level of competency. You can literally change the structure of your brain with deliberate intention and constant rehearsal, even if it is just in the form of a single thought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By default, we are wired to operate from a place of reactivity... constantly scanning our environment for threats. It's primitive and instinctual. The only way to mitigate this is to energize your mind and body with a vision so fierce that your subconscious eventually follows suit.
